Who in the heck would pick a ridiculous moment from the history of a crap 60s superhero adaptation as a band name anyway? Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls and Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys and Rocket From the Tombs, apparently. This four song EP (on 7-inch vinyl, just like in the old days) is less a combination of two vets’ punk pedigree than a tribute to the pre-punk rock & roll days of the early to mid-70s. Sylvain’s What You Lack in Brains brings a goofy smile and a killer chorus to the party, while Chrome’s Bury You Alive goes for the throat with minor-key power chords and slashing guitar. Big Cat Stomp and a cover of Davie Allan & the Arrows’ biker rock standard Blues’ Theme wallow gleefully in snarling six-string licks and frugging rhythms. The Batusis are all about fun with gee-tars and rock & roll, and fun is what they deliver.
